But the situation <\/strong><strong>is different internationally: An estimated 500,000 animals are currently still being used worldwide for torturous tests for cosmetics. However, the ordinance lists exceptions to the ban:<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_blurb use_icon=&#187;on&#187; font_icon=&#187;&#xf0e3;||fa||900&#8243; icon_color=&#187;#B3C965&#8243; icon_placement=&#187;left&#187; content_max_width=&#187;700px&#187; _builder_version=&#187;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#187;default&#187; header_text_color=&#187;#000000&#8243; header_line_height=&#187;1.2em&#187; body_line_height=&#187;1.6em&#187; global_colors_info=&#187;{}&#187;]<\/p>\n<p>The ban applies only to ingredients exclusively found in cosmetics. This is required by Chinese legislation. Products that are also sold on the Chinese market are therefore rarely free of animal testing. Nevertheless, they may still be sold in Switzerland.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#187;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#187;default&#187; global_colors_info=&#187;{}&#187;]<\/p>\n<h2>Why and how are cosmetics tested on animals?<\/h2>\n<p>The tests are justified by the need to ensure the safety of humans and the environment from the toxic effects of marketed substances and products. Unfortunately, many circles in science, industry and politics still hold the traditional opinion that animal testing is the only way to prove the safety of substances. However, the transferability of results from animals to humans is often not possible because humans are not mice nor rats. The following are some of the animal tests carried out for safety and compatibility tests for cosmetic products and their ingredients, primarily on rodents:<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_blurb title=&#187;Acute and chronic toxicity&#187; use_icon=&#187;on&#187; font_icon=&#187;&#xf0c3;||fa||900&#8243; icon_color=&#187;#B3C965&#8243; icon_placement=&#187;left&#187; content_max_width=&#187;700px&#187; _builder_version=&#187;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#187;default&#187; header_text_color=&#187;#000000&#8243; header_line_height=&#187;1.2em&#187; body_line_height=&#187;1.6em&#187; global_colors_info=&#187;{}&#187;]<\/p>\n<p>Ingestion toxicity is tested in rodents by administering different doses over different time periods. Depending on the substance and dose, severe side effects such as convulsions, diarrhea, and bleeding may occur.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_blurb title=&#187;Skin, eye, mucous membrane irritation&#187; use_icon=&#187;on&#187; font_icon=&#187;&#xf0c3;||fa||900&#8243; icon_color=&#187;#B3C965&#8243; icon_placement=&#187;left&#187; content_max_width=&#187;700px&#187; _builder_version=&#187;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#187;default&#187; header_text_color=&#187;#000000&#8243; header_line_height=&#187;1.2em&#187; body_line_height=&#187;1.6em&#187; global_colors_info=&#187;{}&#187;]<\/p>\n<p>Testing for skin, eye and mucous membrane irritation of substances can result in painful inflammation and chemical burns in the test animals. The Draize test, which is used to test eye irritation of substances on rabbits and is highly invasive, is particularly controversial. Unfortunately, it has not been fully replaced to date.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_blurb title=&#187;Skin allergies&#187; use_icon=&#187;on&#187; font_icon=&#187;&#xf0c3;||fa||900&#8243; icon_color=&#187;#B3C965&#8243; icon_placement=&#187;left&#187; content_max_width=&#187;700px&#187; _builder_version=&#187;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#187;default&#187; header_text_color=&#187;#000000&#8243; header_line_height=&#187;1.2em&#187; body_line_height=&#187;1.6em&#187; global_colors_info=&#187;{}&#187;]<\/p>\n<p>The substance to be tested is injected into the skin of the test animals (often guinea pigs) to stimulate the immune system. The animal is then exposed to the test substance again to test for the occurrence of allergic reactions such as skin inflammation.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_blurb][et_pb_blurb title=&#187;Toxic effect of substances under the influence of sunlight (phototoxicity)&#187; use_icon=&#187;on&#187; font_icon=&#187;&#xf0c3;||fa||900&#8243; icon_color=&#187;#B3C965&#8243; icon_placement=&#187;left&#187; content_max_width=&#187;700px&#187; _builder_version=&#187;4.20.2&#8243; _module_preset=&#187;default&#187; header_text_color=&#187;#000000&#8243; header_line_height=&#187;1.2em&#187; body_line_height=&#187;1.6em&#187; global_colors_info=&#187;{}&#187;]<\/p>\n<p>After the test animals, usually rodents, have been injected subcutaneously with the test substance, the animals are fixed and exposed to ultraviolet radiation in the wave range 400nm-315nm (= UV-A). Diese Methoden sind nicht nur aus Sicht des Tierschutzes besser, sondern sie liefern auch oftmals die genaueren Resultate.<\/p>\n<h3>In-vitro-Testverfahren<\/h3>\n<p>Bei in-vitro-Testverfahren werden k\u00fcnstliche Zellkulturen gez\u00fcchtet. Damit lassen sich komplexe Gewebe wie Muskeln und ganze Organe \u2013 sogenannte Organs-on-chips \u2013 wie die Lunge, das Herz, die Niere oder den Darm im Labor nachbauen. F\u00fcr Tests von Kosmetikprodukten ist hier insbesondere das aus menschlichen Zellen hergestellte Hautmodell von Bedeutung. Daran k\u00f6nnen die Effekte von kosmetischen Substanzen getestet werden.<\/p>\n<p>Ein Beispiel f\u00fcr die erfolgreiche Etablierung solcher Verfahren ist Epiderm: Ein Hautmodell, dessen Entwicklung von Animalfree Research mitfinanziert wurde. Ohne dieses in-vitro-Hautmodell f\u00fcr Sicherheits- und Vertr\u00e4glichkeitspr\u00fcfungen w\u00e4re das Verbot von Tierversuchen f\u00fcr Kosmetika in der EU undenkbar gewesen.<\/p>\n<h3>In-silico-Testverfahren<\/h3>\n<p>Computersimulationen k\u00f6nnen biochemische Vorg\u00e4nge nachbilden. Auf der Basis bestehender Daten \u00e4hnlicher Chemikalien l\u00e4sst sich errechnen, wie sch\u00e4dlich eine Substanz f\u00fcr den Menschen sein kann. Mithilfe solcher Modelle k\u00f6nnen beispielsweise toxische Wirkungen von Kosmetikinhaltsstoffen abgekl\u00e4rt werden.<\/p>\n<h3>Dermatologische Tests an Freiwilligen<\/h3>\n<p>Wie vertr\u00e4glich ein Kosmetikprodukt auf der menschlichen Haut ist, l\u00e4sst sich am aussagekr\u00e4ftigsten am Menschen selbst beobachten. Und so lassen verantwortungsvolle Kosmetikhersteller ihre Produkte vor der Markeinf\u00fchrung unter kontrollierten wissenschaftlichen Bedingungen an Freiweilligen testen.<\/p>\n<h2>Der Kosmetikratgeber: Orientierung im Label-Dschungel<\/h2>\n<p>Tierversuchsfrei Kosmetika im Verkaufsregal zu erkennen, ist gar nicht so leicht. Mittlerweile gibt es zahlreiche Zertifikate und Labels, die dabei helfen, die richtige Entscheidung zu treffen. Doch auch hier gibt es Stolpersteine: Ein tierversuchsfreies Produkt ist nicht zwingend komplett tierleidfrei. Es kann tierische Inhaltsstoffe enthalten und ist damit f\u00fcr eine vegane Lebensweise ungeeignet. In the meantime, there are numerous certificates and labels available that help consumers to make the right decision. But there are still stumbling blocks: an animal-free product is not necessarily completely free of animal suffering. It may contain animal ingredients and is therefore unsuitable for a vegan lifestyle.
